Mae was the best-dressed woman any of us knew, and she was always cold.
She lived where the first frost comes in October and the last one leaves in April, and she refused, for fifty years, to let that decide what she wore. No puffer over the good coat. No thermals showing at the wrist. If a dress was right for the evening, she wore the dress. Her trick was never the forecast. It was what went underneath.
Sheer tights with a secret lining. A fine knit that was warmer than it had any right to be. A scarf she could wear indoors without anyone asking why. She put the warmth where nobody could see it, and then she went out: the morning walk, the school gate, the match, the long lunch, the party in a house with one radiator. She never once looked like she was dressed for weather.
That is the whole idea behind Wintermae. Dress for the outfit, not the forecast.
Warm winter clothes for women that don't look like winter clothes
Most cold-weather clothing is built for the slope or the trail and then sold to people walking to the car. It is loud, it is bulky, and it tells everyone you lost the argument with the weather. We make the other kind: pieces that look like the clothes you already love and are quietly, seriously warm.
Everything in the collection passes one test before it goes on the site. Would Mae have worn it on the coldest morning of the year, and would anyone have been able to tell?
What we make
The Wintermae Legging is a fleece-lined legging that passes for sheer black tights from three feet away and keeps you warm at 20°F. Footed or footless, in light and everyday weights. It is the piece we started the brand around, and the one most people buy twice.
Over-the-Knee Fuzzy Socks stay up without a grip band, feel like a blanket, and disappear under boots. Seven colours, because socks are the easiest thing in the world to give.
The Heated Jacket warms across the back and chest thirty seconds after you press the button, runs for hours on a standard power bank, and reads as a clean quilted layer. No logo across the chest, no tech-wear silhouette.
The Pocket Hand Warmer is a rechargeable hand warmer in brushed aluminium that heats on both faces, runs up to three hours, and charges your phone when you need it to. Silver, rose gold or gold, and small enough for a coat pocket or a clutch.
The Wintermae Wrap is an oversized cashmere-feel wrap in five colours, soft enough to sleep under, and the piece we hear about most often as a gift. It arrives folded in tissue, in a box that needs no wrapping.
How we choose
We are a small brand and we would rather sell six things we trust than sixty we don't. Every piece is sourced from makers we have ordered from ourselves, worn through a real winter, washed, and compared against the best version we could find at any price. We check the lining weight, the seams, the hand feel, and the one thing most warm clothing fails on: whether it still looks good after the fifth wear.
When a product doesn't hold up, it comes off the site. When one does, we add colours and sizes until the people who love it can find theirs.
